The Traverse City Police Department in conjunction with the Traverse City Area Public Schools implemented a school liaison program which included a police officer being assigned to the Traverse City Central High School.    The program began in 1981 with the assignment of Sergeant McEvoy as the department's first school liaison officer.    Currently, Patrol Officer Matthew Verschaeve serves as the department's school liaison officer.   His office is located within Central High School's "F" building.    His office telephone number is (231) 933-3599.

Officer Verschaeve conducts presentations in the school and instructs in the classroom on special topics.  He is constantly interacting with the faculty and the students and maintaining a safe atmosphere for all to make the High School a more conducive place to learn.

Officer Verschaeve attends many of the home sporting events related to the school.  Officer Verschaeve is also responsible for investigating crimes that occur at the High School and at Northwestern Michigan College located nearby.
