MISSION: The Traverse City Human Rights Commission strives to ensure human dignity through advocacy, education, negotiation and information ensuring understanding and respect among all.

All appointments are for 3-year terms expiring 6/30

This commission consists of 9 members to be appointed by the Mayor with the approval of the City Commission. Membership shall be broadly representative of the entire community.

Purpose "To foster mutual understanding and respect among all groups and discourage discriminatory practices, formulate and carry out programs of community education and information, receive and act as conciliator regarding occurrences of acts of prejudice or discrimination, and secure the cooperation of various community groups in educational campaigns devoted to eliminating prejudice and discrimination."

Resolution reestablishing the Human Rights Commission was adopted by the City Commission on June 7, 1993.

Meets 2nd Monday of each month at 5:30 pm

    CITY PLANNING COMMISSION

    This Commission consists of 9 members - all terms expiring the second Monday in December.

    Membership consists of the following:

         *Six persons appointed by Mayor with approval of the City Commission (3-yr terms).
         *The Mayor of the City of Traverse City.
         *One administrative official selected by the Mayor.
         *One member of the City Commission selected by that Body.

    Purpose: To prepare and adopt physical plans for the City; and to review development proposals, both private and public, regarding their consistency with City plans.

    Creation of the City Planning Commission required by City Charter Section 160 and by Section 1220 of the City Code of Ordinances.

    Meets the first and third Wednesday following the first and third Monday of each month at 7:00 pm.

    PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION

     Committee Members

    All appointments are 3-year terms expiring 09/01.

    This Commission consists of 7 members who are registered electors of the City. One member is the City Manager or designee, the other 6 are appointed by the City Commission.

    Purpose: to make recommendations (advisory capacity) to the City Commission on matters relating to the operation, development, and planning of parks, recreation and cemetery services and activities.

    Meets the 1st Thursday each month at 6:30 pm in the Commission Chambers.

    Except for Mayor, all appointments are 4-year terms expiring 9/15.

    Board consists of 12 members, which includes Mayor who is statutory member. The other members are appointed by Mayor and approved by City Commission.

    "At least a majority of the members shall be persons having an interest in property located in the downtown district."

    "At least one of the members shall be a resident of the downtown district."

    "In addition, for anyone to be appointed to serve on the Board of Trustees, that person must reside within the City or own taxable property within the City, or have an ownership interest in an entity that owns taxable property within the City."

    Purpose: "To halt property value deterioration and increase property tax valuation where possible in the business district of the City, to eliminate the causes of that deterioration and to promote economic growth by establishing a downtown development authority pursuant to Act 197 of the Public Acts of 1975."

    DDA Meeting Schedule: 3rd Friday each month @ 8am in the Commission Chambers in the Governmental Center.
